Police Seize Mostly Assembled Rifle at City Creek Mall in Salt Lake City

Salt Lake City Police seized a “mostly assembled rifle” at City Creek Mall on Saturday, following a disturbance at a nearby coffee shop. Police have stated that there is no evidence suggesting a public threat.

According to the Salt Lake City Police Department, officers received a report at 5:33 p.m. of a disturbance at a coffee shop located at 80 S. Main Street. An employee had observed what appeared to be firearm components in a backpack belonging to a 33-year-old man.

Officers immediately responded and searched the area, locating and detaining the individual with the help of City Creek safety officials. During the investigation, they discovered a mostly assembled rifle inside the man’s backpack. However, police noted that there is no indication the firearm had been fully assembled.

The man, a tourist from Australia, has not been charged, and his identity has not been released. Authorities are working to determine how he came into possession of the firearm.

Although the situation was serious, police have assured the public there is no evidence of a broader threat, and no charges have been filed at this time. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) has been notified and is assisting in the ongoing investigation.
