19-Year-Old Utah Student Dies After Falling 50 Feet on Hawaii Hike

A 19-year-old undergraduate student at the University of Utah tragically passed away over the winter break after falling while hiking in Hawaii. Tiare Cuoto, originally from Oahu, Hawaii, was studying environmental and sustainability studies alongside political science at the U of U. She had returned home for the holidays when the unfortunate incident occurred.

On New Year’s Day, Cuoto was hiking on a trail on the North Shore of Oahu when she fell 40 to 50 feet. Both the Honolulu Fire and Police Departments reported that Cuoto suffered significant injuries from the fall. Unable to return to the trail on her own, she required rescue assistance. Emergency crews managed to reach her and provide life-saving efforts, transporting her to a local hospital. Sadly, she succumbed to her injuries shortly after arriving at the hospital.

Tiare was described as an exceptional student, recognized for her passion and dedication. Michelle Camacho, the Dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Science at the University of Utah, highlighted Cuoto’s leadership as one of only ten students selected to represent the college as a Student Ambassador. Camacho also described her as a committed and passionate individual.

Cuoto had previously shared her aspirations in the University of Utah’s “Humans of the U” series. She expressed her desire to create environmental change, stating that her experiences in both Hawaii and Salt Lake City had opened her eyes to the urgent need for environmental protection. She explained, “I love caring about the planet and I want to earn the skills I need to find common ground with people who have different viewpoints than me,” adding that her goal was to work on environmental change at the policy level.

Her commitment to environmental issues stemmed from witnessing the direct impact of pollution on the ocean in her hometown, particularly as the area experienced increased development due to growing populations. Cuoto was passionate about raising awareness that protecting the planet was essential for the future of beloved natural spaces.

Tiare Cuoto’s untimely passing has left a profound impact on the University of Utah community, where she was known as a dedicated student, a passionate environmental advocate, and a promising leader.
