Wegmans Recalls Sorbet Due to Undeclared Egg Allergen Risk

Wegmans, a Northeastern supermarket chain, has issued a recall for My/Mochi Peach Mango Sorbet due to a mislabeling issue that potentially exposes consumers with egg allergies to an undeclared ingredient. This recall impacts six-count packages of the dessert and has been linked to a risk of allergic reactions for those sensitive to eggs, which can cause life-threatening conditions such as anaphylaxis.

Why It Matters

Food recalls due to undeclared allergens pose serious health risks, particularly to individuals with allergies. Anaphylaxis, a potentially fatal allergic reaction, can occur and requires immediate medical attention. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that approximately 6% of adults and 8% of children in the U.S. are affected by food allergies.

Details of the Recall

Wegmans announced the recall on Tuesday, affecting six-count packages of “My/Mochi Peach Mango Sorbet” with UPC number “0-70934-99868-1” and lot codes “337-24” or “341-24.” While the recall is specific to Wegmans stores, a spokesperson for My/Mochi confirmed that approximately 100 Target stores are also affected. Nationwide, the recall involves about 1,200 cases.

Wegmans operates stores in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, and the District of Columbia. The recalled product can be returned for a full refund.

The Risk

For most consumers, the undeclared egg in the sorbet may not pose an issue, but for those with egg allergies, it can result in severe reactions. Symptoms of an allergic reaction to eggs include swelling, difficulty breathing, rashes, vomiting, diarrhea, and even loss of consciousness in severe cases. Egg is one of the nine major food allergens recognized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

What Consumers Should Do

Consumers who have purchased the affected product should return it to the store for a full refund. Wegmans has provided customer service at 1-855-934-3663 for additional assistance. Although recalls related to mislabeling are rare, they serve as a reminder of the importance of clear labeling for the safety of all consumers.

What’s Next?

The recall’s impact remains limited, but the food industry will likely continue to see recalls due to ingredient mislabeling. Similar recalls, such as a cookie recall last year by Stew Leonard’s due to peanuts, have resulted in fatal allergic reactions, further highlighting the need for vigilance in allergen labeling.
