Salt Lake City Police Shoot Armed Man During Traffic Stop Incident
Salt Lake City – A 32-year-old man remains in critical condition after being shot by Salt Lake City Police officers during an unrelated traffic stop early Thursday morning.
According to a statement from the Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD), the incident occurred around 2 a.m. on January 9 near 375 South and 765 West. Officers had initiated a traffic stop when the 32-year-old man, who was not connected to the stop, approached the scene carrying a weapon.
Police reported that the officer involved opened fire, wounding the man. The officer was not injured during the encounter. The man, whose identity has not been released, was transported to a hospital in critical condition.

In a press release, SLCPD Chief Mike Brown expressed his support for the officers involved, stating, “Our police officers are highly trained. Whenever there is a threat to our community or our officers, I have absolute confidence in their ability to act with speed and courage to eliminate the danger and protect everyone. This appears to have been yet again another rapidly unfolding, life-threatening, and dangerous situation. Our officers have my full support.”
An independent agency has been assigned to investigate the shooting. Authorities confirmed that the driver involved in the original traffic stop was unharmed and not connected to the shooting.
