TOOELE COUNTY, Utah — The Utah Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has issued a reminder to the public about the risks of driving on the Bonneville Salt Flats when the surface is wet, after recent damage caused by vehicles.
New photos released by BLM Utah today show visible damage from cars driving across the wet salt flats. The BLM has emphasized the importance of avoiding such behavior to protect the delicate environment.
“The damage from just one area is clearly visible. This is exactly why driving on the salt flats during wet conditions is strongly discouraged,” the BLM stated in their social media post.
When the salt flats are wet, the fragile salt crust can crack under the weight of vehicles, revealing the muddy surface beneath. This not only scars the landscape but also damages the natural ecosystem.
In addition to environmental concerns, driving on wet salt can lead to drivers getting stuck, with costly recovery fees that can reach as high as $5,000.
“The lesson learned is both costly for your wallet and damaging to the salt flats,” BLM Utah added.
For those planning to visit the Bonneville Salt Flats, the BLM recommends the following precautions:
-
Drive only when the surface is dry: Always check for standing water or damp areas. Ensure the surface is firm and dry by touching it before driving.
-
Avoid the edges: The salt crust is thinner near the edges, making it easier to get stuck. Stay clear of these areas to prevent getting stranded.
-
Use designated access routes: The main route to the salt flats is off Exit 4 from I-80. Follow Bonneville Salt Flats Access Road for about five miles to the parking area. Only proceed past this point if the surface is dry and stable.
-
Respect the environment and other visitors: Many people travel from around the world to experience the Bonneville Salt Flats. Let’s work together to preserve this unique and iconic location.
BLM Utah’s warning serves as a timely reminder to be cautious and considerate of the natural beauty of the Bonneville Salt Flats while also ensuring a safe experience for all visitors.
