HERRIMAN, Utah — While midfielder Diego Luna may be grabbing headlines with a team-high six goals this season, it’s Real Salt Lake’s goalkeeper Rafael Cabral who’s quietly become the backbone of the team’s success.
In his debut MLS season, Cabral has brought a wealth of international experience — having played over 370 matches across top-flight leagues in Italy, England, and Brazil. His presence has already made a noticeable difference for RSL, both in performance and leadership.
“Rafael’s been a revelation for us,” said head coach Pablo Mastroeni. “What fans see on the field is just the tip of the iceberg. He’s kept us competitive in matches we might have lost otherwise, and off the field, he’s been an outstanding presence.”
Cabral has started every minute of RSL’s first 11 matches this season, placing second in the league with 41 saves and recording two clean sheets. He’s also made a pair of critical penalty stops — including a crucial save in last week’s match against Vancouver.
“I put in a lot of work studying our opponents before each game,” Cabral said. “Stopping penalties is part of my responsibility, and I take it seriously.”
Defender Justen Glad praised the goalkeeper’s influence, saying, “He’s not just a great shot-stopper — he’s someone who leads by example. He commands the backline with authority.”
Teammate Alex Katranis added jokingly, “I wish he had fewer saves — it means he’s getting tested too often. But every time, he’s there for us.”
Turning 35 this month, Cabral’s experience has added maturity to an otherwise young RSL squad. Having won championships in both Italy and Brazil, his winning pedigree is respected throughout the locker room.
“His background speaks for itself,” said Katranis. “When someone like him speaks, you listen.”
As Real Salt Lake (4-7-0) works to find consistency in the win column, Cabral is focused on helping the team turn performances into results.
“It’s tough to win back-to-back games in this league,” he said. “But if each of us takes ownership of our role and gives everything, those results will come.”
RSL will look to start that momentum when they face FC Dallas on the road this Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
