Deserae Turner, the Utah teen who miraculously survived being shot in the head by two classmates in 2017, is now entering hospice care following a years-long struggle with the lasting effects of her injuries.
Now 22 years old, Deserae says she’s come to terms with what lies ahead.
“Death is scary. I won’t pretend it isn’t,” she said. “But after all the pain and suffering, I’m ready for peace.”
At just 14, Deserae was targeted by two teenage boys in Smithfield, Utah, who lured her to a canal bed and shot her. Against all odds, she survived the traumatic brain injury and went on to become a symbol of strength and perseverance. The two teens responsible were each sentenced to a minimum of 15 years in prison.
Since the attack, Deserae has shown remarkable determination. She completed high school, got married, and served a mission through her church. But her recovery journey has been anything but easy. According to her family, Deserae has undergone nearly 50 medical procedures — 16 of which were brain surgeries.
Despite her resilience, Deserae’s health has declined significantly in recent months. With new complications arising, her family says she has transitioned to hospice care.
“I’ve lived with so much pain for so long,” she shared. “Now it’s time for me to take steps toward being free from that pain.”
As Deserae prepares for her final days, she is surrounded by family and friends. Her mother, April Turner, described her daughter as nothing short of extraordinary.
“She is strong, brave, determined, and so full of love,” April said. “I couldn’t be more proud of the person she has become.”
Deserae has also shared a heartfelt thank you to the countless people who have supported her throughout the last eight years. “There’s no way I can thank everyone individually,” she said. “But from the bottom of my heart, thank you.”
She offered one final message to others: “Keep moving forward. Keep living your life and doing what’s good for you. That’s what I’m trying to do for myself.”
A GoFundMe campaign has been created by Deserae’s family to help cover funeral costs and outstanding medical expenses. In just a few hours after launching on April 8, the fundraiser had already brought in more than $15,000 in donations.
Deserae expressed her gratitude for every act of kindness.
“The donations, the prayers, the love — all of it has meant so much to me. I just want everyone to know how thankful I truly am.”
