DRAPER, Utah — A quartet of charismatic newcomers has joined the Loveland Living Planet Aquarium’s penguin exhibit. The aquarium recently introduced four macaroni penguins — two males and two females — into its Penguin Research Station, where they now share space with 22 gentoo penguins.
Macaroni penguins are easily identified by their vibrant yellow crest feathers, giving them a flashy appearance that lives up to their name. The term “macaroni” hails from the 18th century, originally used to describe a flamboyant fashion trend — a far cry from the pasta most people associate with the name today.
In their natural habitat, macaroni penguins are deep-sea divers and expert foragers. They primarily feed on krill, squid, and small fish, and are capable of plunging over 100 meters below the surface. The aquarium notes their bodies are well-equipped for the marine lifestyle, with waterproof feathers and unique salt glands that allow them to shed excess salt from the ocean water they consume.
This species is currently listed as “vulnerable” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), meaning they face a high risk of endangerment in the wild.
“The addition of macaroni penguins to our exhibit offers guests a rare and up-close look at a unique and fascinating species,” said Dr. Ari Fustukjian, Vice President of Zoological Operations. “It’s a chance to explore their natural behaviors, specialized adaptations, and conservation challenges.”
To celebrate the penguins’ arrival, the aquarium is inviting the public to participate in naming them. Through an online form, individuals can submit up to four name suggestions — two for males and two for females. Submissions will be accepted through Wednesday, April 9.
Since opening in March 2014, the Loveland Living Planet Aquarium has welcomed nearly 10 million visitors. The addition of the macaroni penguins marks another step in its ongoing mission to educate and inspire guests about wildlife and conservation.
