BRIGHAM CITY, Utah — Authorities are seeking the public’s help in identifying a body discovered in a garbage bag earlier this week, after a distinct tattoo was found on the remains.
On April 4, Brigham City Police released a sketch of a heart-shaped tattoo located on the victim’s left upper arm, hoping it will be recognized by someone close to the individual.
“We’re optimistic that a family member or friend might recognize this tattoo, which could move our investigation forward,” the department said in a public statement.
The body was clothed in what officials described as feminine apparel, including black leggings and a black hoodie. Though this suggests the victim may be female, the exact gender has yet to be confirmed.
An initial autopsy, conducted on Thursday morning, offered limited information due to the advanced state of decomposition. The Utah Office of the Medical Examiner could not determine the individual’s age, gender, race, or ethnicity. However, one identifying detail noted was the victim’s long reddish-brown hair, tied back with a hair tie.
The gruesome discovery occurred on April 2, when construction workers cleaning up debris near 2600 West Highway 13 noticed an unusually heavy garbage bag. Upon opening it, they discovered human remains.
Detectives believe the person may not be a Brigham City resident, as there are currently no local missing persons reports matching the case. It’s unclear how long the body had been deceased. Authorities noted that decomposition could indicate death occurred weeks — or even years — ago.
Detective Crystal Beck from Brigham City Police said the remains could have been stored elsewhere for a period of time before being dumped at the current location.
“We don’t yet know where the body was originally kept or when it was brought to this area,” Beck said.
Investigators are urging the public to share any relevant information or dashcam footage from the area. Tips can be reported by calling 435-856-7023. Those wishing to remain anonymous may call 435-723-1244.
Detectives say they’ve already received multiple leads, including a potential dashcam submission, and anticipate more updates soon.
ABC4 will provide further details as the investigation progresses.
