A man was arrested Wednesday night following a high-speed pursuit that escalated into gunfire in Taylorsville, according to the Utah Highway Patrol (UHP).
The incident began on Interstate 15 near 6000 South, where a trooper spotted a vehicle traveling at 104 miles per hour. When the officer attempted to pull the driver over, the suspect refused to stop, triggering a chase.
“The pursuit escalated quickly,” said Major Jeff Nigbur with UHP. “The suspect exited onto I-215 South, then veered off onto Redwood Road before eventually fleeing into a residential area.”
Authorities terminated the pursuit once the driver left the freeway but were able to track the suspect using the vehicle’s license plate information. Troopers then responded to the registered address in Taylorsville, where five or six officers initially arrived to locate the driver.
Upon approaching the residence, officers reported gunfire from inside the home. A family member was later detained after allegedly discharging a weapon during the chaos. Law enforcement also stated that some of the shots appeared to be aimed at troopers, while others were fired within the residence.
At one point, the suspect attempted to flee again, getting back into his vehicle. However, a Taylorsville police officer rammed the car, forcing it into a front yard and disabling it. Officers then ordered the suspect out at gunpoint and placed him under arrest.
Despite the exchange of gunfire, no law enforcement officers discharged their weapons. A Taylorsville officer sustained minor injuries after ramming the suspect’s car and was taken to a local hospital.
Further investigation revealed that South Salt Lake Police had been searching for a vehicle involved in a separate incident in which gunshots were reportedly fired around the city. Authorities now believe that the suspect’s vehicle matched the description of the one involved in that earlier case.
“There was no way for us to know at the time, but the vehicle involved in the pursuit was also linked to another shooting investigation,” officials said.
The suspect was taken into custody, and no additional threats to the public were reported. Authorities confirmed that there are no outstanding suspects and that no residents were injured in the incident .
