For the first time in its history, the USA Water Polo Girls Olympic Development Program (ODP) National Championship was held in Utah, marking a significant moment for the sport in the state.
A Pathway to Excellence
The Olympic Development Program (ODP) is designed to nurture young athletes, providing a structured pathway to collegiate and Olympic-level competition.
“This program is not only about developing future Olympians but also shaping skilled athletes and strong individuals,” said Brad Peercy, aquatics director at Kearns Recreation Center, where the event took place.
National Competition, Local Representation
A total of 18 teams from 13 different regions across the U.S. participated in the championship, with Utah athletes competing as part of the Mountain Zone team, led by coach Mitchell Walker.
“These players have dedicated months of training to advance through this year’s ODP cycle,” Walker said.
Walker noted that select players from each team may receive an invitation to train with USA Water Polo and compete internationally, giving them an opportunity to represent Team USA on a global stage.
Beyond Competition
While the championship focuses on high-level competition, it also emphasizes player development and growth. USA Water Polo officials say that participation in ODP not only enhances athletic skills but also fosters discipline, teamwork, and leadership—qualities that extend beyond the pool.
With Utah hosting the event for the first time, local athletes had the chance to compete at an elite level while showcasing the state’s growing presence in the sport .
