Incident Overview
On Thursday afternoon, officers from the Murray City Police Department responded to a court-ordered eviction at an apartment on West Fireclay Avenue. They were assisting constables in removing an individual who had refused to vacate the premises.
Upon arrival, officers encountered resistance as the suspect barricaded themselves inside a bedroom and refused to leave. In an alarming turn, the suspect reportedly used an aerosol spray and a lighter to create a flame burst, directing it at law enforcement.
Emergency Response
Concerned that the suspect was attempting to ignite a fire, officers quickly evacuated the apartment complex and called in the fire department. In an effort to de-escalate the situation, officers broke a window and deployed pepper ball rounds to force compliance.
Instead of surrendering, the suspect allegedly attacked the officers, prompting one of them to fire their weapon, striking the suspect in the hand. The individual then surrendered and was taken into custody before being transported to the hospital for treatment.
Investigation Underway
As per standard procedure, the officer who discharged their weapon has been placed on administrative leave. The case is now being investigated by the Salt Lake City Officer-Involved Critical Incident (OICI) Protocol Team .
