Maela McKallip, Georgia State Champion, Joins Utah Swim Team for Class of 2025
Georgia – Maela McKallip, a standout sprint freestyle specialist and three-time Georgia 5A State Champion, has verbally committed to the University of Utah as part of their class of 2029. McKallip, a senior at Mary Persons High School and a swimmer for Fusion Swim Team, is the first swimmer from Georgia to commit to Utah in recent years, marking a new recruiting milestone for the program.
Throughout her high school career, McKallip has dominated the 50 and 100 freestyle events, winning three Georgia 5A State Titles over two seasons. In her sophomore year (2023), she claimed the 50 freestyle title with a time of 23.92 and was the runner-up in the 100 freestyle with a time of 52.26. This year, McKallip successfully defended her 50 freestyle title with an impressive time of 23.29 and added a second victory by winning the 100 freestyle at 50.88.

McKallip recently competed at the 2024 East Winter Juniors, where she achieved personal bests in both the 50 and 100 freestyle events. She placed 16th in the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.21, just shy of her personal best, and reached 21st in the 100 freestyle with a time of 50.47. She also competed in the 200 freestyle (1:51.05) and 100 backstroke (57.68). For her academic and athletic achievements, McKallip earned Scholastic All-American honors for the 2023-2024 season.
As Utah transitions into the Big 12 Conference, McKallip’s talents are poised to make an impact. In the Big 12 rankings, her best times would place her 20th in the 50 freestyle, 27th in the 100 freestyle, and 41st in the 200 freestyle. With her strong sprint freestyle skills, McKallip is expected to become a scoring threat in her freshman year, especially in the 50 and 100 freestyle events. She will also add significant depth to Utah’s relay teams, as her times would position her among the top-4 on the team’s sprint freestyle depth chart.
