TOOELE COUNTY, Utah — A serious crash on Interstate 80 Sunday afternoon left one driver with severe injuries after their vehicle became wedged under a semi-truck and caught fire.
According to the Utah Highway Patrol, the crash occurred near mile marker 24 on westbound I-80 when a small SUV slammed into the back of a semi-truck’s trailer. The impact caused the SUV to become lodged underneath the truck, igniting a fire.
Emergency crews responded quickly, and the driver of the SUV was flown to a nearby hospital for treatment. Despite sustaining serious injuries, officials say the individual is expected to survive. The semi-truck driver was unharmed.
The crash prompted lane closures, with UHP initially shutting down the roadway before later reopening one lane to traffic. The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) issued an advisory warning motorists to prepare for significant delays.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and no further details have been released at this time .
