Newborn Twins Say Goodbye to Their Mother in Heartfelt Moment at Utah Hospital
Utah – A Utah hospital provided a heartbreaking yet meaningful opportunity for a mother to say goodbye to her newborn twins after she tragically passed away just nine days following their birth.
Morgan Hughes, 23, delivered twins, Hudson and Georgia, on December 19, 2024, six weeks prematurely. Despite a smooth delivery, Morgan, who had long dreamed of becoming a mother, was later diagnosed with pre-eclampsia, a pregnancy complication. Unfortunately, her condition worsened, and Morgan developed postpartum cardiomyopathy—a rare heart condition that weakens the heart muscle, making it hard to detect during pregnancy.

The condition, which affects about 1 in 2,000 live births, mimics the symptoms of normal pregnancy and can be difficult to diagnose. Morgan was readmitted to Utah Valley Hospital after experiencing fainting episodes and other cardiac complications. Doctors discovered that fluid had built up around her heart, and despite intensive care, she passed away on December 28, 2024.
In a poignant final moment, hospital staff allowed Morgan to hold her twins, who were being cared for in the NICU, giving the family a chance to say their goodbyes. “It was a bittersweet image—so precious, but devastating at the same time,” said Morgan’s father, Brian Hodson.
Though the twins remain in the NICU, they are expected to be released soon and are continuing to receive care.
