SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is advising motorists to delay their Tuesday morning commute if possible, as a strong winter storm is set to create hazardous driving conditions across the Wasatch Front.
According to an updated road weather alert from UDOT, major highways and mountain routes throughout Utah will be impacted, with traction laws likely to be enforced in canyon areas.
Storm to Bring Snow and Strong Winds Across Utah
A powerful cold front is expected to sweep through the state starting Monday evening, bringing strong winds, rain, and eventually snow. Meteorologists predict the system will reach northern Utah by 6 p.m. before moving southward, hitting southern Utah by 10 p.m.
“The storm will bring gusty winds and rain that will quickly transition to snow, even in lower elevations,” said ABC4 Meteorologist Nate Larsen.
Travel Impacts Across Major Roadways
The storm is expected to cause travel difficulties along several key highways, including:
- I-15 from the Utah-Idaho border down to Cedar City
- I-215 and I-84 in their entirety
- I-80 from Grassy Hill to the Wyoming border
- Several canyon and mountain routes, including Cottonwood Canyons, Logan Summit, and Powder Mountain
Mountain passes will see the most severe conditions, with several inches of snow expected overnight. UDOT has warned that wind speeds could reach 40 to 50 mph in areas like Wendover and Tooele, increasing the risk of drifting snow near Brian Head and Upper SR-14.
Expected Snowfall Totals
Forecasters anticipate 1 to 3 inches of snow in the valleys, with higher elevations seeing up to 6 inches or more, particularly in the Benches. The worst travel conditions are expected overnight into Tuesday morning, creating potentially dangerous roadways during the early commute.
UDOT is monitoring conditions closely and will release further updates as the storm progresses. Motorists are encouraged to check the UDOT Traffic website for real-time road restrictions and conditions .
