SALT LAKE CITY – A powerful late-season winter storm has moved into Utah, bringing heavy snow, travel disruptions, and a series of weather warnings. The system, which arrived late Monday, has stalled over Salt Lake County, leading to significant snowfall in both valley and mountain regions.
According to meteorologists, this could be the most substantial snowfall event of the season for the Salt Lake Valley. The storm was at its peak overnight and into the early morning commute, creating hazardous road conditions. Snowfall is expected to continue throughout the day, prompting the Utah Department of Transportation to issue advisories for drivers navigating slick and snow-covered roads.
The National Weather Service has issued Winter Weather Advisories across a broad section of the state, including the Northern Wasatch Front, Tooele and Rush Valleys, Utah County, Cache Valley, and multiple mountain regions in northern, central, and southern Utah.
Meanwhile, Winter Storm Warnings are in place for the Salt Lake Valley and Southern Wasatch Mountains. This marks the first and only Winter Storm Warning of the season for Salt Lake City. Under this warning, residents in the valley could see between 2-6 inches of snow, while higher elevations on the east benches could accumulate 6-12 inches. The warning remains in effect until 6 p.m. Tuesday, with heavy snowfall expected to impact the morning commute.
For the Southern Wasatch Mountains, the warning extends through 6 a.m. Wednesday, with forecasts predicting 1-2 feet of snow, and possibly up to 30 inches in areas like the Upper Cottonwoods.
Additional Winter Weather Advisories cover several parts of the state, with varying snowfall amounts:
- Cache Valley & Eastern Box Elder County – 1-3 inches, advisory expires at 9 a.m. Tuesday.
- Northern Wasatch Front, Tooele/Rush Valleys, Utah Valley – 1-4 inches (3-8 inches in higher elevations), advisory lasts until 6 p.m. Tuesday.
