The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) has issued a road weather alert ahead of an incoming cold front, warning travelers of potential disruptions across the state’s major highways early this week.
The alert highlights expected travel challenges along key routes, including I-15 from the Idaho border to Cedar City, I-215, I-84, and I-80 between Grassy Hill and the Wyoming state line. Nearly 30 highways could be affected, and UDOT advises motorists to check its website for a complete list of impacted areas.
“A powerful cold front is set to push through Utah on Monday evening, bringing strong winds and a mix of rain and snow,” said ABC4 Meteorologist Nate Larsen. “Lower elevations will likely see rain transition into snowfall fairly quickly as the system moves through.”
The front is expected to arrive in northern Utah by approximately 6 p.m. Monday, reaching southern portions of the state around 10 p.m.
Mountain passes, including Cottonwood Canyons, Logan Summit, and Powder Mountain, could see significant snowfall starting Monday night and continuing into Tuesday. UDOT warns that several inches of snow accumulation are likely, and traction laws may be enforced in affected areas.
Wind gusts between 40 and 50 miles per hour could create additional hazards, particularly along I-80 from Wendover to Tooele. Drifting snow could also impact travel near Brian Head and Upper SR-14.
“Snowfall south of Brigham City could lead to difficult travel conditions overnight into Tuesday morning,” Larsen added. “Valley areas can expect between 1 to 3 inches of snow, while higher elevations may see 6 inches or more.”
UDOT plans to issue an updated advisory on Monday, as the storm’s impacts could persist into Wednesday. Travelers should monitor UDOT’s Traffic website for the latest road conditions and restrictions .
