SALT LAKE CITY – Brian Redd officially stepped into his new role as Chief of Police for the Salt Lake City Police Department on March 4. In an interview with ABC4’s Jordan Tracy, Redd discussed his priorities and approach to public safety as he takes the helm.
Redd was appointed by Mayor Erin Mendenhall following the release of her comprehensive public safety strategy—a plan in which he will play a key role.
“I was already aware of the public safety plan while working with the Department of Corrections,” Redd explained. “I had conversations about it early on, so I was familiar with its goals. When I spoke with the mayor about this role, we discussed it in depth, and I fully support the initiative.”
The safety strategy was created in response to state lawmakers who had expressed concerns about crime and policing in Salt Lake City. In a formal letter, legislators criticized the department’s past leadership, arguing that previous efforts had been insufficient.
When asked about the need to rebuild relationships with lawmakers, Redd remained focused on collaboration. “My job isn’t about politics,” he stated. “It’s about working with all stakeholders to ensure a safer community.”
The new public safety plan calls for increased police patrols and stricter measures for repeat offenders. However, balancing law enforcement with compassion—particularly when addressing homelessness—remains a challenge.
Redd believes both enforcement and assistance can coexist. “Holding people accountable and treating them with dignity are not mutually exclusive,” he said.
Beyond stricter policing, the plan emphasizes long-term solutions such as expanding access to social services, increasing affordable housing options, and securing resources for treatment programs.
“There has to be accountability first, or the rest won’t be effective,” Redd added.
As he steps into his leadership role, Redd aims to implement a balanced approach—one that prioritizes both safety and the well-being of the community .
