LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Utah State made sure history didn’t repeat itself in Las Vegas, bouncing back from an earlier loss to UNLV with a commanding 70-58 victory in the Mountain West Conference Tournament quarterfinals on Thursday night at the Thomas & Mack Center.
Ian Martinez led the charge with 17 points, while Mason Falslev contributed 15 points, nine rebounds, and six assists to help the Aggies secure a spot in the tournament semifinals. Karson Templin and Tucker Anderson each chipped in nine points for Utah State.
Defensive Dominance
Utah State (26-6), the No. 3 seed, put on a defensive clinic, holding UNLV to just 23.6% shooting (13-for-55) — the second-worst field goal percentage in Mountain West Tournament history. The Rebels struggled from beyond the arc, connecting on just three of 20 three-point attempts.
Despite their shooting woes, the No. 6-seeded Rebels (18-15) managed to stay in the game by making 29 of 37 free throws. Jaden Henley led UNLV with 19 points and five steals, while Jalen Hill and Jailen Bedford each added 13 points.
Aggies Stay in Control
Utah State never trailed after taking the lead early in the first half, heading into the break with a 36-29 advantage. The Aggies maintained control throughout the second half, keeping UNLV at arm’s length and stretching the lead to as much as 15 points.
Semifinal Matchup Set
With the win, Utah State advances to the Mountain West semifinals, where they will face No. 2 seed Colorado State on Friday night at 10:00 p.m. MT. The Rams dominated the Aggies in their last meeting, securing a 93-66 victory in Fort Collins just two weeks ago.
Meanwhile, No. 1 seed New Mexico will take on No. 5 Boise State in the other semifinal matchup .
