The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has escalated the recall of Six Count Raisin Bran Muffins from JE Bakery 2019 LLC, originally issued on February 12, to a Class I recall—the most serious designation. This classification indicates that consuming the product could potentially result in severe health consequences or even death.
Reason for the Recall
The recall stems from a mislabeling issue. The product was packaged as Six Count Bran Muffins but actually contained Glorious Morning Muffins, which include walnuts, a major food allergen. Walnuts are classified as a tree nut, one of the FDA’s Big Nine allergens, which can trigger life-threatening allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.
The affected muffins were distributed in Minnesota and Wisconsin and sold under store brands including Cub Foods, Jerry’s Foods, and County Market. Each package weighs 12 ounces and carries the UPC 0 29341-00233 7 with a sell-by date of February 18, 2025.
Discovery and Response
The issue was discovered when a retail location identified the mislabeling error and alerted JE Bakery 2019 LLC. The company immediately contacted affected retailers, who removed the product from shelves.
Although no illnesses have been reported, the recall underscores the importance of accurate food labeling to protect consumers from potential allergens.
Pattern of Allergen Recalls
The mislabeled muffins were among several recalls in February related to undeclared allergens:
- February 15: Mauna Loa Milk Chocolate Covered Macadamias – undeclared almonds
- February 19: Berry Buddies & Berries & Pancakes snack packs – undeclared wheat and eggs
- February 20: Las Ollas Botana Mix Snacks and Delights – undeclared wheat, sesame, soy, and food dyes
- February 20: Ulker snack rolls, biscuits, and wafers – undeclared wheat, eggs, and milk
- February 21: Glicks Dark Chocolate Conettos – undeclared milk
Next Steps for Consumers
Although the sell-by date has passed, consumers who may still have the muffins should not eat them. Instead, they should return the product to the store for a full refund.
JE Bakery 2019 LLC has expressed regret over the incident, stating: “We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and remain committed to ensuring the safety and quality of our products.”
