A new class-action lawsuit filed in New York on Monday claims that Girl Scout Cookies contain harmful heavy metals and pesticides, an allegation the organization has previously rejected.
According to the lawsuit, independent testing revealed the presence of aluminum, arsenic, cadmium, lead, mercury, and the pesticide glyphosate in cookies sold across multiple states. The plaintiffs argue that every batch tested contained at least four of the five heavy metals listed.
Allegations of Contamination
The lawsuit cites research from New Jersey Laboratories Certified and the Health Research Institute, which allegedly found “extremely problematic” levels of contaminants. One example referenced in the suit claims Thin Mints contained more than 300 times the acceptable level of glyphosate. Additionally, over 95% of tested cookies reportedly had detectable amounts of lead.
The legal filing criticizes the Girl Scouts of the USA, arguing that the organization—known for promoting ethical business practices and leadership skills in young girls—failed to uphold those same principles when concerns about contamination arose.
Girl Scouts Responds
Although the Girl Scouts of the USA did not immediately respond to requests for comment, the lawsuit references previous statements the organization made earlier this year.
In February 2025, the Girl Scouts released a statement reassuring customers that all cookies meet FDA food safety standards and are safe to eat.
The organization acknowledged that trace amounts of heavy metals can naturally occur in soil, affecting plant-based ingredients used in many foods. They also stated that glyphosate is commonly used in agriculture, and small amounts are often found in cereals, baked goods, and produce.
“Our trusted baking partners continue to uphold strict food safety regulations, ensuring the integrity of our recipes and the safety of all Girl Scout Cookie products,” the organization stated.
What the Lawsuit Seeks
The plaintiffs are requesting a jury trial and are demanding financial restitution, as well as a ruling that the Girl Scouts’ practices violate consumer protection laws. They are also calling for the court to prevent further deceptive marketing and require the organization to disclose potential health risks.
As the lawsuit progresses, it remains to be seen how the Girl Scouts of the USA will respond to these claims and whether changes to cookie production or labeling will follow.
