The U.S. Department of Education has launched an investigation into Ohio State University (OSU) over alleged antisemitic harassment and discrimination on campus. OSU is among 60 universities nationwide being scrutinized following a rise in reported antisemitic incidents since the Israel-Hamas conflict began in October 2023.
The federal probe is part of a broader initiative aimed at ensuring universities uphold federal anti-discrimination laws. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon emphasized the responsibility of academic institutions to protect Jewish students, warning that schools failing to comply with federal regulations could face serious legal consequences.
OSU and Other Universities Under Federal Scrutiny
Ohio State, along with the University of Cincinnati, is one of two Ohio institutions under review. The investigation also extends to several other Big Ten universities, including Indiana University, the University of Michigan, the University of Minnesota, Northwestern University, Rutgers University, and the University of Wisconsin.
While OSU officials have yet to receive formal communication from the Department of Education regarding the investigation, university representatives told NBC4 in Columbus that they are committed to maintaining a safe and inclusive environment for all students.
Rising Campus Tensions and Policy Shifts
The investigation comes at a time of heightened campus tensions. Recent protests at OSU have centered around the university’s decision to eliminate its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) office, as well as opposition to Ohio Senate Bill 1, which seeks to restrict DEI initiatives. The policy changes have sparked widespread debate, with student groups voicing concerns over the university’s stance on equity and inclusivity.
Additionally, federal authorities have taken a more aggressive approach toward campus policies and student activism. The Trump administration has advocated for cutting federal funding to institutions that fail to prevent what it deems “illegal protests,” though the specifics of this directive remain unclear.
“Universities that allow unlawful demonstrations will risk losing federal funding,” Trump stated in a recent social media post. “Students engaging in illegal activities will face severe consequences, including expulsion or legal action.”
As federal scrutiny intensifies, Ohio State University now finds itself at the center of a national conversation on free speech, antisemitism, and university governance. The outcome of this investigation could have far-reaching implications for how universities navigate political and social tensions on campus .
