WASHINGTON – A man armed with a firearm was shot by U.S. Secret Service agents early Sunday near the White House after an altercation, officials reported.
The incident occurred around midnight, roughly one block from the White House. No one else was injured in the shooting. At the time, then-President Donald Trump was in Florida.
According to the Secret Service, local law enforcement had provided information about a potentially suicidal individual traveling from Indiana. Officers later located the suspect’s vehicle along with a person matching the description.
“As officers approached, the suspect displayed a firearm, leading to an armed confrontation during which our personnel discharged their weapons,” the Secret Service stated.
The wounded man was transported to the hospital, though his condition remains unknown. The Metropolitan Police Department has taken over the investigation due to the involvement of law enforcement in the shooting. However, officials have not released additional details at this time .
