SALT LAKE CITY – Utah is experiencing widespread rain and snowfall, making for a wet and wintry Thursday across the state. While the Wasatch Front has seen persistent rain showers, the mountains are accumulating significant snowfall, with totals already exceeding a foot in some areas. More snow is on the way, continuing into Friday.
High Winds and Winter Storm Warnings
The gusty winds that impacted southwestern Utah earlier today are now shifting toward southeastern Utah, prompting a Wind Advisory until 8 p.m. Thursday. Some areas could see wind gusts exceeding 50 mph.
Meanwhile, Winter Storm Warnings remain in place until 5 p.m. Friday, affecting mountain regions across the state:
- Cottonwoods: 12-36 inches of snow expected
- Northern Mountains: 12-24 inches
- Central Mountains: 10-20 inches
- Southern Utah Mountains: 8-16 inches
In addition, Winter Weather Advisories are in effect for the Wasatch Back and Bear River Valley, where mountain valleys are set to receive measurable snowfall. Park City could see 5-10 inches, while other areas under advisory may pick up 3-6 inches.
Friday Morning Commute Could Be Challenging
With snow levels dropping overnight, Friday morning’s commute may be impacted by accumulating snow down to valley floors. Current projections estimate:
- Wasatch Front valleys: Up to 2 inches
- Benches: 2-5 inches
- Wasatch Back: 4-8 inches
- Park City area: 5-10 inches
- Mountain regions: 1-3 feet of total snow accumulation by Friday afternoon
Drivers should anticipate slushy and slick conditions above 6,000 feet, with winter driving hazards on mountain routes.
Weekend Brings a Brief Break Before More Storms Arrive
By the weekend, dry and milder conditions will return, with a mix of sun and clouds and temperatures near or above seasonal averages. However, this quiet weather won’t last long.
Looking ahead to next week, another storm system could bring light snow Tuesday and Wednesday, followed by a more significant system later in the week. March is certainly living up to its reputation as an active weather month in Utah.
