Jeff Baena, Director of ‘Life After Beth,’ Dead at 47

LOS ANGELESJeff Baena, an indie filmmaker known for his dark comedies and frequent collaborations with his wife, actress Aubrey Plaza, has passed away at the age of 47.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed Baena was found deceased at a Los Angeles residence around 10:30 a.m. on Friday. Details surrounding his death remain unclear, and the case is under investigation. A full report will be released once the inquiry concludes.

Plaza’s representative declined to comment directly but shared a link to a Deadline article reporting Baena’s passing.

Baena made his mark in Hollywood as the co-writer of David O. Russell’s 2004 film I Heart Huckabees and as the writer-director of five films, including the 2014 zombie comedy Life After Beth. Plaza starred in Life After Beth and appeared in two other Baena films: The Little Hours and Spin Me Round.

Plaza, 40, rose to prominence as April Ludgate on the hit series Parks and Recreation and recently earned an Emmy nomination for her role in The White Lotus. The couple, who frequently collaborated on creative projects, married in 2021.

Baena’s passing marks a significant loss for the indie film community and those who admired his unique storytelling style.
