Salt Lake City – Several federal properties in Utah, including key office buildings in Salt Lake City, Ogden, and St. George, have been identified for disposal by the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA). These buildings are part of a nationwide effort to eliminate underutilized federal properties and reduce government spending.
Among the Utah properties designated as “non-core” by the GSA’s Public Building Service are the IRS Service Center in Ogden, the St. George Federal Building, and the Wallace F. Bennett Federal Building in Salt Lake City. According to the GSA, decades of limited funding have left many government-owned buildings outdated and no longer suitable for use by federal employees.
The agency explained that most of the properties marked for disposal are office spaces that do not play a critical role in government operations. In Utah, the IRS and the U.S. Forest Service are the primary tenants of the buildings managed by the GSA.
Nationwide, more than 400 federal properties are being considered for closure or sale, including prominent buildings like the FBI headquarters and the main Department of Justice building, as reported by the Associated Press.
The GSA noted that these non-core properties account for nearly 80 million rentable square feet and would require over $8.3 billion in recapitalization efforts. In Utah alone, the affected buildings cover more than 830,000 square feet.
Managing over 360 million square feet of rentable space across the country, the GSA aims to cut costs by eliminating vacant and underused federal office spaces. The agency emphasized its commitment to reducing wasteful spending on maintaining buildings that are no longer essential to government operations.
The initiative aligns with broader efforts to decrease government expenditures and streamline federal operations, an approach backed by former President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk. Additionally, canceled federal office leases have been made publicly available on the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) website .
