SANDY, UTAH – Real Salt Lake finally found its scoring touch, securing a 2-0 win over the Seattle Sounders in its MLS home opener on Saturday afternoon.
Early Own Goal Gives RSL the Lead
RSL struck first in the 8th minute, thanks to a miscommunication in Seattle’s defense. Alexandros Katranis sent a routine cross into the box, but Sounders defender Nouhou Tolo misjudged his header, inadvertently sending the ball into his own net as goalkeeper Stefan Frei had already moved off his line.
Ajago Seals the Win
Despite controlling much of the match, Real Salt Lake didn’t extend its lead until late in the second half. In the 79th minute, Forster Ajago capitalized on a long goal kick from Rafael Cabral. After a quick give-and-go with Diogo Goncalves, Ajago found himself in open space and delivered a precise left-footed shot past a charging Frei to double RSL’s lead.
Ajago has now scored both of Real Salt Lake’s goals this season, having also netted a goal in their Champions Cup loss to CS Herediano earlier in the week.
Defensive Stand
Goalkeeper Rafael Cabral kept a clean sheet, stopping all three shots on target from the Sounders. Seattle struggled to generate offense, with two goals disallowed for offside.
The Sounders (0-1-1) continued their poor run in Utah, now winless in six straight matches at America First Field. Their all-time record at RSL’s home stadium stands at 1-13-4.
