Sister Believes Mental Break Led to Salt Lake City Man’s Fatal Police Shooting
SALT LAKE CITY – 27-year-old Tanner Cottrell was shot and killed by police after authorities said he intentionally set a fire, led them on a chase, fired at officers, and crashed his truck. However, Cottrell’s sister, Malyssa, believes the events were out of character for her brother and thinks he experienced a mental breakdown before the tragic incident.
“He never, ever would start any arguments,” Malyssa explained. “If there was anything bad happening, he would just walk away.”
On Friday, Malyssa visited the scene where her brother died, near Redwood Road and 12400 South. The force of the crash, which occurred just before police opened fire, flipped the truck onto its side and severely damaged a nearby camper.

“He was protective, as brothers are supposed to be,” Malyssa shared. “We will miss him.”
Tanner was one of five siblings, and Malyssa believes he struggled with mental illness, though she chose not to specify further.
“I know that if he would have gotten the help he needed, this never would have happened,” she said.
Malyssa’s grief has been compounded by judgmental comments about her brother on social media.
“It’s a whole different kind of hurt,” she said.
When asked by 2News what she hoped the final story would reveal, Cottrell responded, “The truth, what happened to him. What made him have this mental breakdown, and what led to him being killed by the cops.”
