In a high-profile conversation with former President Donald Trump, billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk stressed the need for efficiency in government spending, emphasizing that taxpayers deserve better financial management.
Musk’s Perspective on Fiscal Responsibility
Speaking with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, Musk—who chairs the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) alongside leading Tesla and SpaceX—highlighted the importance of “competence and caring” in government operations.
“To cut wasteful spending, you need at least one of two things: competence or caring,” Musk stated. “Ideally, both. But if you have neither, taxpayers get a bad deal—and unfortunately, that’s what’s been happening.”
Seated together, Trump and Musk discussed the federal government’s inefficiencies, expressing concern over excessive bureaucracy and financial mismanagement. They agreed that significant reform is necessary to protect taxpayer dollars.
Major Government Overhauls Underway
Since Trump returned to office last month, his administration has begun implementing deep budget cuts. Federal agencies—including the IRS, the Department of Defense, and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau—are under review as part of an effort to reduce unnecessary expenditures.
Musk described these changes as critical, stating, “Government waste has been out of control for too long. It’s time to return power to the people and ensure their money is being used responsibly.”
Trump echoed this sentiment, revealing that investigations have already uncovered billions in financial mismanagement. “It’s only the beginning,” he said. “We’re talking about uncovering hundreds of billions in fraud, waste, and abuse.”
Deficit Reduction Plans
Musk also provided an update on DOGE’s fiscal targets, revealing that the original goal of cutting $2 trillion from the national deficit has been revised to $1 trillion. However, he suggested that wasteful spending could far exceed current estimates.
“If we don’t control our deficit, we’re headed for economic disaster,” Musk warned. “Countries can go bankrupt just like individuals. If you keep overspending, eventually, the money runs out.”
Both Musk and Trump indicated that more sweeping reforms are on the way, signaling a continued push to overhaul government spending.
