Capitol Protest in Utah Condemns Mass Deportation Policies

On Sunday, Feb. 23, demonstrators gathered at the Utah State Capitol to voice their opposition to President Donald Trump’s intensified immigration enforcement measures.

Carrying signs and flags, the crowd condemned Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids and the administration’s strict immigration policies. Many attendees shared personal stories of families being separated due to increased enforcement.

“We’re just here trying to build a better future, just like everyone else,” said Maria Morales, one of the demonstrators. “We want the same opportunities.”

The protest began at the capitol, where hundreds of participants assembled before marching down State Street to Washington Square Park. Protesters expressed their frustration with recent policies and their determination to continue speaking out until changes are made.

“I stand with the immigrant community because I care about the people affected by these policies,” said Travis Hysell, another protester. “Regardless of immigration status, everyone deserves to be treated with dignity.”

The demonstration came on the heels of a similar protest on Presidents’ Day, during which demonstrators criticized both President Trump and his adviser Elon Musk over recent policy decisions.

February has seen a surge in demonstrations throughout Utah, including a controversial gathering by a white supremacist group and subsequent counter-protests. Residents have also rallied in support of Ukraine and other marginalized groups.

Recent protests have at times turned tense, with incidents involving pepper spray and at least one protester being struck by a vehicle.

In light of the increased number of demonstrations, Salt Lake City police have urged organizers to obtain proper permits to ensure safety measures such as road closures are in place .
