Two teenage runaways from Texas were unexpectedly caught when their journey ended in a car crash in Louisiana, authorities said. The Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Office reported that one of the 13-year-old girls lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a tree early Tuesday, Feb. 18.
The girls had traveled approximately 145 miles from their hometown of Atlanta, Texas—located northeast of Dallas—before the wreck occurred on U.S. Highway 71 near the Natchitoches-Winn Parish border. Deputies responded to the single-vehicle accident around 5 a.m. and found both teens at the scene, with one sustaining minor injuries, according to a news release.
Investigators determined that the girl behind the wheel had fallen asleep, causing the car to veer off the road, cross the center line, go through a ditch, and collide with a tree. Emergency responders treated her injuries at the scene, but she did not require hospitalization.
The sheriff’s office did not disclose details about the car’s owner or the teens’ intended destination. Following the crash, both girls were released into the care of their relatives.
