Officials have released the identities of three individuals who lost their lives in a devastating crash inside Wyoming’s Green River Tunnel on Friday, February 14.
According to a statement from the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) on February 18, the victims were identified as Christopher Johnson, 20, and Quentin Romero, 22, both from Rawlins, Wyoming, along with 30-year-old Harmanjeet Singh from Nova Scotia, Canada. Tragically, all three were pronounced dead at the scene.
WYDOT Director Darin Westby expressed condolences to those affected by the tragedy, stating, “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Rawlins community and the families, friends, and loved ones of these individuals.”
Johnson and Romero were employed as operators for HF Sinclair, an energy company that also released a statement following the accident. “We are deeply saddened by this heartbreaking incident that claimed the lives of three people, including two of our employees,” the company said. “Our thoughts are with their families and the community during this incredibly difficult time.”
A third fatality from the crash was confirmed on Sunday, and officials completed evidence collection at the scene by Monday, February 17.
In addition to the fatalities, 18 individuals sustained injuries and received medical treatment at a hospital in Sweetwater County, though no further details on their conditions were provided.
The Wyoming Highway Patrol (WHP) has kept the westbound tunnel closed, urging drivers to avoid the area due to ongoing safety concerns. WHP Colonel Tim Cameron warned, “Falling debris and air quality hazards make it unsafe for anyone without proper protective gear and training to enter the site. Preventing further injuries is our top priority.”
Investigators believe a total of 26 vehicles were involved in the catastrophic crash—10 passenger vehicles and 16 commercial trucks. Of those, eight vehicles were completely consumed by fire.
Authorities are working to analyze all available evidence to determine the exact cause of the multi-vehicle collision. “We appreciate the public’s patience as we thoroughly investigate the circumstances of this tragic event,” Cameron added.
