Authorities have completed their investigation at the scene of a fatal crash in the I-80 tunnel near Green River, Wyoming, confirming that three people lost their lives in the tragic incident.
“Our hearts go out to the families affected by this devastating loss,” said Wyoming Highway Patrol (WHP) Col. Tim Cameron. “We ask for privacy for those grieving as we continue to investigate.”
The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) verified on Sunday that a third fatality had been confirmed. Officials do not anticipate any further casualties from the crash. Evidence collected at the scene will be used to digitally reconstruct the accident, helping investigators determine its cause and sequence of events.
An off-duty WHP trooper was involved in the incident but was unharmed. The trooper assisted in evacuating individuals from the tunnel after the crash.
Traffic Adjustments and Delays
WYDOT crews are working on modifying the eastbound tunnel to accommodate temporary two-way traffic. Concrete barriers will be installed to separate lanes and facilitate the transition. While this setup is designed to maintain traffic flow, drivers should expect delays.
“We have experience implementing temporary head-to-head traffic in the tunnels,” said John Eddins, WYDOT District 3 Engineer. “With proper signage and reduced speeds, we believe this solution will help minimize disruptions for the Green River community. However, given the volume of traffic on I-80, some delays are inevitable.”
Restrictions will be in place for oversized vehicles, with a width limit of 10.5 feet and a height restriction of 16 feet. Those with larger loads are advised to contact WYDOT’s oversize permit office for alternate routes.
Drivers are urged to slow down and use caution when navigating the detour through Green River. Additional state troopers will be stationed near the tunnel and throughout the city to monitor traffic and enforce safe speeds. WYDOT also warns motorists to be cautious when using GPS, as suggested alternative routes may not be suitable for interstate travel.
