Investigation Ongoing After Fatal Wyoming Tunnel Crash

GREEN RIVER, Wyoming — Authorities continue to investigate a devastating multi-vehicle collision inside the tunnels on Interstate 80 near Green River, Wyoming, that took place on Friday. The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) confirmed the situation remains active, with multiple agencies working at the scene.

According to WYDOT, response efforts were initially delayed due to an intense fire inside the westbound tunnel. The Wyoming Highway Patrol’s Crash Investigation Team has since arrived to assess the damage and gather details about the incident.

Although two fatalities have been confirmed, officials have yet to release updated figures on the total number of casualties or injuries. Emergency crews battled the fire for several hours, with conditions inside the tunnel—such as heavy smoke and structural concerns—posing significant challenges.

“The dedication and teamwork shown by first responders who worked tirelessly through the night cannot be overstated,” said WHP Lt. Col. Karl Germain.

Preliminary reports indicate that multiple commercial and passenger vehicles were involved in the crash, primarily within the middle and western portions of the westbound tunnel. Crews are currently working to remove wreckage and abandoned vehicles from the site.

Due to the crash, traffic is being redirected around the affected area. Westbound vehicles are being diverted at mile marker 91, while eastbound traffic is being routed off the highway at mile marker 89 through Green River, potentially impacting local roadways.

“The fire caused damage to electrical components and lighting in the westbound tunnel, leaving thick soot throughout the structure,” WYDOT stated. “Engineers are awaiting clearance to conduct a full assessment.”

While officials have assured the public that the eastbound tunnel remains structurally sound, evaluations of the westbound tunnel are still pending.

Further details are expected as the investigation progresses.
