SALT LAKE CITY — Joshua Goy Riak, 23, is the first of three men to enter a plea in the 2022 killing outside a sneaker convention at the Salt Palace Convention Center. On Wednesday, Riak pleaded guilty to manslaughter, a second-degree felony, and aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony, in connection with the deadly altercation.
The incident, which occurred on September 3, 2022, resulted in the death of 41-year-old Deliford Knight from Florida. Knight had been involved in a card game with Riak and two other men—Deng Mawat Buk and Nogolweit “Nunu” Kug—during the convention. Police said Knight, who had a history of defrauding people at such events, convinced the men to join the game. Riak’s plea stated he lost $3,000 in the game, which led to a heated argument that escalated from inside the building to the streets outside.
The altercation unfolded near a parked vehicle and another car trapped in traffic. As Knight attempted to flee, Kug reportedly pulled out a handgun and shot him in broad daylight, according to charging documents. While Knight was receiving assistance from bystanders and emergency responders, he tragically succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Witnesses at the scene described the event, with one bystander capturing a video of Knight, who was seen trying to stand up and raising his hands. Investigators confirmed that Buk ran toward the parking garage as Riak and Kug rifled through Knight’s pockets, appearing to take cash.
All three men, who are cousins and reportedly affiliated with gangs, were initially charged with murder and aggravated robbery. Buk was also charged with obstructing justice. They are set to stand trial together, with a joint jury trial scheduled for February 21.
As part of his plea agreement, Riak agreed to plead guilty to a reduced charge of manslaughter. His sentencing is set for April 3.
