SALT LAKE CITY – A wrong-way crash on Interstate 15 near Beaver on Sunday resulted in three individuals being hospitalized and both directions of the highway being shut down for several hours.
At around 2:16 a.m., a 2006 Cadillac was traveling north in the southbound lanes of I-15. The Department of Public Safety (DPS) reported that a trooper was positioned nearby and attempted to intervene with the wrong-way driver.
As the Cadillac continued its dangerous path, near mile marker 88.5, the driver accelerated to 90 mph, swerving towards the officer. In an effort to stop the vehicle, the trooper tried a PIT maneuver, but the driver evaded it, maintaining high speeds and heading against traffic.
DPS stated that the Cadillac reached speeds of 115-120 mph before reducing speed back down to around 90 mph as it continued on its reckless course.
The driver eventually collided with a 2024 Freightliner semi-truck near mile marker 98, causing the Cadillac to spin out into the median and roll over. The semi-truck then crossed into the northbound lanes, stopping after coming to a halt in the opposite direction.
A 2014 Toyota subsequently struck the trailer of the Freightliner, and shortly after, a 2011 Freightliner also heading north collided with the broken trailer, splitting it in half.
The second semi-truck then struck the rear of the Toyota, and both women inside the Toyota were taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.
The driver of the Cadillac had to be extricated from the wreckage, and was airlifted to the hospital in critical condition. Thankfully, there were no further injuries reported in the incident.
DPS stated that the crash caused significant traffic disruptions, with both northbound and southbound lanes of I-15 closed for more than two hours due to the extensive damage caused by the collisions.
