Authorities arrested a Utah man on Friday evening as he attempted to enter Manhattan through the Lincoln Tunnel, following alleged threats made against synagogues in New York City.
Luis Ramirez, 23, was taken into custody at approximately 5:30 p.m. by Port Authority police in New Jersey after law enforcement officials were alerted to a series of antisemitic social media posts, according to police and sources.
Online Threats Target NYC Synagogues
Investigators say Ramirez used his X (formerly Twitter) account to post violent threats, referencing Central Synagogue on Lexington Avenue in Midtown Manhattan specifically.
Law enforcement was tipped off that Ramirez was traveling from out of state toward New York City. Port Authority officers, in coordination with the NYPD, intercepted him before he could reach his intended destination, police confirmed.
The Community Security Initiative (CSI)—a partnership between the UJA-Federation and the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York—flagged the threats and worked with law enforcement agencies to notify synagogues across the city, sources said.
Firearm Possession & Investigation
Although Ramirez was not armed when stopped near the Lincoln Tunnel, sources indicate that he had previously been found in possession of a firearm during an earlier stop in Kansas City, according to ABC News.
Authorities have not yet filed charges, as the investigation remains ongoing, police said.
Ramirez is currently being held at the Hudson County Correctional Center in Kearny, New Jersey, sources report. He is expected to appear in court for arraignment on Saturday.
