Authorities have confirmed the discovery of a man who went missing two decades ago, determining that his death was not the result of foul play.
On Tuesday, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office announced that the body of Steven Willard Anderson, 47, was recovered from a submerged vehicle in Starvation Reservoir on Sept. 30, 2024.
A Long-Unsolved Case
Anderson was reported missing in June 2004, and for 20 years, his case remained an open and ongoing investigation. Despite efforts over the years, authorities were unable to locate him—until a recent breakthrough.
The discovery came during a joint recovery operation involving United Search Corps, a non-profit organization specializing in finding missing persons. Their efforts led authorities to locate a vehicle submerged approximately 50 feet beneath the surface of the reservoir.
Identification and Investigation
Upon retrieving the vehicle, human remains were found inside. DNA analysis, conducted by a private laboratory, along with an examination from the Utah Office of the Medical Examiner, confirmed the remains belonged to Anderson.
Officials determined that no foul play was involved in his death, leading the sheriff’s office to officially close the case.
Authorities Express Condolences
In a statement, the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office extended its sympathies to Anderson’s family, thanking all agencies that assisted in the recovery and investigation.
“We appreciate the dedication and professionalism of all involved in bringing closure to this long-standing case,” the department stated.
With the investigation now concluded, Anderson’s family finally has some answers after two decades of uncertainty.
