Authorities have released new details about a 14-year-old boy who was located after being reported missing during a snowmobiling trip on Saturday.
Following an extensive search effort that involved multiple agencies, rescue teams found the boy at approximately 9 a.m. on Sunday morning. Officials confirmed he was located not far from where he was last seen.
Surviving the Harsh Conditions
Despite spending a cold night and day in the Utah-Idaho backcountry, the boy was found in surprisingly good condition, according to the Cache County Sheriff’s Office.
“He was immediately brought to incident command and evaluated by medical personnel to assess any potential injuries or medical concerns,” the sheriff’s office stated in a press release.
The search operation, which covered areas in Franklin and Cache County near Franklin Basin, lasted for nearly 24 hours before the boy was found.
Sheriff’s Office Expresses Gratitude
In a statement, the Cache County Sheriff’s Office expressed deep appreciation for the volunteers and rescue personnel who played a crucial role in the search effort.
“This young snowmobiler’s survival is nothing short of miraculous,” the sheriff’s office said. “We hope he continues to enjoy many more safe and memorable snowmobiling adventures with his family and friends.”
Authorities also used this opportunity to remind all backcountry adventurers—especially snowmobilers—to carry emergency preparedness gear to improve survival chances in case of unexpected situations.
Search and Rescue Efforts
The 14-year-old went missing on Saturday, Feb. 8, while snowmobiling with a group near the Utah-Idaho border. His companions had searched for over an hour before notifying authorities.
The Cache County Sheriff’s Office responded to the call and deployed multiple search teams. Rescue crews utilized:
- Snowmobiles and off-road vehicles
- Pisten Bully Snow Cats
- Ski teams and searchers on foot
- Drones equipped with heat sensors
- A helicopter from the Utah Department of Public Safety
Search teams attempted to ping the boy’s phone but were unsuccessful. As conditions deteriorated overnight, with temperatures dropping below zero, additional search personnel from Weber County joined the effort at 2 a.m. Sunday.
By Sunday morning, searchers successfully located the boy, bringing an end to the tense overnight operation.
Authorities have not disclosed further details about the exact circumstances of his disappearance or how he managed to endure the freezing temperatures. However, his safe recovery has been hailed as a remarkable outcome .
