A Utah-based flag company, Colonial Flag, played a key role in Super Bowl LIX, crafting the massive American flag displayed during the national anthem ahead of the matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles.
The flag, measuring 100 feet by 50 feet, was meticulously handcrafted by the Colonial Flag team in Sandy, Utah.
The Art of Flag Making
Creating such a large flag is no small task, requiring weeks of precise craftsmanship. Jacob Swenson, Chief Operating Officer at Colonial Flag, shared the challenges involved in the process.
“It’s incredibly special for us to see something made in Sandy, Utah, showcased on such a global stage,” Swenson told ABC4.com.
From cutting and measuring fabric by hand to carefully aligning each star, every detail is executed with precision. After the initial assembly, the flag is moved to the Mountain America Expo Center, where workers perform final trimming and measurements before it is shipped to its destination.
Eight Weeks of Dedication
The Super Bowl LIX flag took about eight weeks to complete. Swenson emphasized the importance of accuracy, as even minor miscalculations could affect the flag’s final look.
“The star field takes the longest,” Swenson explained. “It’s a challenge because each star must be perfectly placed, and when you’re working on a massive scale, it’s not as simple as aligning things on a small table.”
Colonial Flag’s Impact
Colonial Flag produces over 56,000 flags annually for events like Independence Day and Pioneer Day celebrations across Utah. The company also serves clients worldwide and was responsible for crafting the flag displayed at the 2024 Super Bowl.
Reflecting on the experience, Swenson expressed pride in his team’s work.
“Being part of something that reaches millions of people is truly incredible,” he said.
With another Super Bowl flag completed, Colonial Flag continues its tradition of bringing American pride to the biggest stages.
