Lottery officials in New York are urging a Mega Millions player to come forward after purchasing a ticket worth $1 million in Manhattan.
The lucky player matched five numbers in the Tuesday night drawing, securing the game’s second-highest prize. The ticket was bought at Lucky Corner, a retail store in Manhattan, according to Staten Island Advance.
Near Miss on Jackpot Win
The mystery winner was just one number away from hitting the jackpot, which no player claimed that night. As a result, the grand prize has rolled over, climbing to $94 million with a cash option of $42.3 million for the next drawing.
The last Mega Millions jackpot was won on January 17, when a ticket sold in Arizona scooped up $112 million. Since Arizona joined Mega Millions in 2010, the state has seen three jackpot winners, with previous victories in June 2020 and October 2021.
New York’s High Lottery Taxes
While winning $1 million is life-changing, the New York player will face hefty tax deductions.
- Federal taxes: 24% automatically withheld for prizes exceeding $5,000.
- State taxes: New York enforces a 10.9% tax, one of the highest in the country.
Unlike California and Florida, where state-level taxes do not apply to lottery winnings, New York players must part with a significant portion of their prize before receiving their payout.
Upcoming Mega Millions Changes
Players should prepare for major changes coming to Mega Millions in April 2025.
- Ticket prices will increase from $2 to $5.
- Larger starting jackpots and faster-growing prize pools will be introduced.
- More billion-dollar jackpots are expected, creating more millionaires and billionaires than ever before.
Mega Millions lead director Joshua Johnston expressed enthusiasm for the changes, emphasizing that the game will continue to support charitable causes.
Play Responsibly
Lottery officials remind players to gamble responsibly and set limits on time and spending. If gambling becomes a problem, resources such as the National Gambling Helpline (1-800-522-4700) and the National Council on Problem Gambling are available for support.
