A Sam’s Club shopper recently voiced frustrations over two key issues with the warehouse chain. In addition to the membership fees, the shopper criticized the retailer’s inefficient checkout process, which required waiting in multiple lines.
Sam’s Club and its competitor, Costco, are both known for their bulk offerings, affordable food court options, and expansive product selection. However, not all aspects of the shopping experience are well-received.
One area of customer dissatisfaction at both stores is the reliance on self-checkout and the policy of checking receipts at the exit. While the policy is intended to ensure accuracy in item counts and prevent double scans, many customers find it inconvenient.
“I can’t stand having to wait in line at checkout and then wait again to have my receipt checked as I leave the store,” vented shopper Lee Walker on X. “It’s pointless, just like the membership fees. It’s time for a change!”
Sam’s Club Makes Changes to Address Complaints
Sam’s Club has been working on improving the shopping experience by addressing some of these concerns. In 2018, the retailer introduced its Scan & Go feature, which allows members to bypass checkout lines entirely.
Using the Sam’s Club app, shoppers scan the barcodes of their items as they shop. Payment is then made through the app, and customers can show their digital receipt to a staff member when exiting, skipping the traditional checkout process.
This change has been praised by many customers. “I love the Scan & Go feature. I just scan everything as I shop, and then I walk out with no lines,” one user commented on X. Another shopper highly recommended the app: “If you hate waiting in lines, use the Scan & Go feature at Sam’s Club!”
Costco Lags Behind
Despite these advancements at Sam’s Club, Costco has yet to introduce a similar technology, which has drawn criticism from its customers. “This is why Costco falls short. They haven’t updated their app to have a scan-and-go feature like Sam’s Club. Instead, they still have long lines,” one shopper lamented.
AI-Powered Exit Tech at Sam’s Club
In April 2024, Sam’s Club expanded its commitment to convenience with the launch of AI-powered exit technology. After a shopper completes their purchase, whether at a register or via Scan & Go, the new exit arches use computer vision and digital technology to verify the items in the shopper’s cart.
Todd Garner, Sam’s Club’s Chief Product Officer, expressed his pride in the innovation. “We’re enhancing the shopping experience with our exit technology, and it’s already boosting member satisfaction,” he said. “Our ability to deploy this technology at scale in nearly 600 clubs nationwide sets us apart from competitors.”
Retailers Undergoing Changes
As Sam’s Club continues to innovate, other major retailers are also making adjustments. For example, Aldi has been revamping stores following its acquisition of a well-known grocery chain, and Walmart has announced plans to “reimagine” a popular mall it recently purchased.
With these technological advancements and store improvements, it’s clear that retailers are continuing to evolve in response to customer feedback, making shopping more convenient than ever.
