Weather Alert: Clouds Increase, Valley Rain, and Mountain Snow Expected Friday Evening

Happy Friday, Utah! The Beehive State is enduring another inversion setup this afternoon, which is impacting air quality. This hazy weather will be especially challenging for individuals with asthma and C.O.P.D., so it’s advised to limit outdoor exposure when possible. Above the haze, expect increasing cloud coverage throughout the afternoon, with some breezy conditions developing. The day should stay dry for the most part, but rain and snow are expected to move in later this evening and into the night.

Looking ahead to Saturday, an atmospheric river of moisture will push into northern Utah, bringing heavy rainfall to the valleys and heavy snow to the mountains north of I-80. As temperatures rise over the weekend, snow levels are expected to climb, meaning valley areas will likely see more rain than snow. However, the Wasatch Mountains north of I-80 and the Bear River Range will be hit hard with significant snowfall. The heaviest snow will be found above 7,000 feet, with a total accumulation of up to 4 feet of snow in the Bear River Range.

To prepare for these conditions, the National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning and Winter Weather Advisory for northern Utah. The Winter Weather Advisory, in effect from 5 a.m. Saturday to 8 p.m. Sunday, will cover the Wasatch Plateau/Book Cliffs area, expecting around 6-12 inches of snow. Meanwhile, the Wasatch Mountains are under a Winter Storm Warning from Friday evening to Monday evening, with totals possibly reaching 1-2 feet of snow, while the Bear River Range could see up to 4 feet.

For areas north of I-80, rain will be the dominant form of precipitation as snow levels rise, but rainfall amounts are still expected to range between 0.5” to 1.00”. On the other hand, southern Utah is in for pleasant weather, with a mix of clouds and sunshine and temperatures warming up. As the storm moves out of the area, expect spring-like temperatures to return, with highs reaching near 60 along the Wasatch Front and climbing near 70 in southern Utah.
